Alix Wilding is back at this year’s Glastonbury Festival with Feeding the Fish.
Formed in 1996, and working with bespoke LED juggling equipment ever since, Feeding the Fish have gained a worldwide reputation as pioneers in event performance. The team of dancers and jugglers has toured the world, performing at hundreds of corporate and high profile events including Café de Paris, the Great Pyramids in Egypt, the Closing Ceremony of the London Paralympics, Bahrain Formula 1, Cirque du Soleil, the MTV Awards and nine years of Glastonbury Festival.
Now they’re back at the festival and we spoke with Wilding about what it’s like to be back.
Q&A with Alix Wilding, Artistic Director of Feeding the Fish
What can you tell us about Feeding the Fish?
We have performed in 57 countries around the world including at events such as the MTV awards, The London Olympics, Café de Paris and with Cirque du Soleil. Pioneers of LED performance, inventors of LED Pixel-Poi and Pixel Video Suits, Feeding the FIsh are always on the lookout for new tech to incorporate in the shows. Performances can include anything from 2 to 42 professional dancers, juggers and poi spinners.
How does it feel to be performing at this year’s Glastonbury Festival?
We are very excited to be coming back for the 10th time! It’s become a part of our summer season and we missed it so much during Covid.
What can festival-goers expect from the shows?
A mesmerising melange of dance, lights, juggling and music! Oh and a personalised surprise in the finale of the show – created especially for Glastonbury Festival 2023
How do you prepare for shows like these?
Programming the effects in our LED equipment takes a week or so, then there are rehearsals every day to make sure we are on top technical form. The crowds at Glasto can be super enthusiastic and very loud so we have to be able to keep focussed on stage.
Are there any other acts your looking forward to seeing at the festival?
Yes! Barbarella is opening the Strummerville stage tonight at 10pm. She’s an incredible half Italian singer and is produced by Dave Randall from Faithless. We are also looking forward to Marcel Lucont (Caberet Fantastique) in the Cabaret Tent, he is a very funny French man. His performances are always hilariously irreverent.
