Glastonbury Festival 2024: The Astrolabe Theatre Preview

We spent a lot of time in the Astrolabe Theatre last year catching sets by Rod Laver, The Black Eagles, George Egg and more. The theatre is set in Glebeland directly opposite The Glebe Bar.

So grab a pint and check out some of these options in Glastonbury Festival’s home of theatre, drama, dance, and comedy.

Astrolabe Theatre: Picks of the Weekend

Jonathan Pie / Thursday from 19:15 to 20:15 and Friday from 18:40 to 19:45

Jonathan Pie the (fake) angry political commentator brings his show to the Astrolabe after performances in 2022 and 2023. He’s just finished off his Heroes & Villains Tour with a live recording of the show in the pipeline. There’s no need to wait for that when you can see him live and in the flesh at Glastonbury.

The Black Eagles / Friday from 15:05 to 15:35, Saturday from 15:10 to 15:35 and Sunday from 13:00 to 13:25

The Black Eagles set provides an example of the astonishing feat of human capability – even when it seems impossible. Originally from Tanzania, they learned their acrobatic skills at the age of six on the streets of Dar-Es-Salaam – and they’re well worth seeing.

(The Very Best of) Tommy Cooper / Sunday from 17:10 to 18:10. Also performing in Mavericks and a Walkabout set.

Written and performed by Daniel Taylor, this hilarious one-man show focuses on Tommy Cooper’s legendary comedy act, recapturing his trademark mayhem and misfiring magic and includes many of Cooper’s beloved one-liners, dazzling wordplay and celebrated tricks, including Glass/Bottle, Dappy Duck, Spot the Dog and Jar/Spoon. A perfect chance to let up some steam and have a nostalgic laugh in the early evening.

Siegfried & Joy / Friday from 11:50 to 13:00 and Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 to 13:00

Siegfried & Joy stop off at Glastonbury Festival during a massive European tour that takes in the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany and a host of dates across the UK including three dates at London’s Leicester Square Theatre. Expect mind-bending illusions and brilliant comedy from the Berlin duo.

Rod Laver / Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 15:35 to 15:50. Also in Mavericks

Our review in 2023 described Rod Laver’s set as “a delight of a performance and a highlight of the weekend.” Expect exceptional tricks using ping pong balls, such as using them to play Beethoven’s Ode to Joy on an xylophone onstage.

Trash Test Dummies / Friday and Saturday from 13:10 to 14:10 and Sunday from 13:35 to 14:35

One for all the family. Australian circus-comedy group Dummies Corp return to the festival with a family adventure that takes the humble household wheelie bin to new heights in Trash Test Dummies. With ballet and balloons thrown in for good measure, this is what the Times called “adept unadulterated mischief.”
