What is Moulin Rouge! The Musical about?
The musical sees Christian, a young American writer, seeking to find himself in Paris at the turn of the 20th century where he encounters members of the Bohemian movement including Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Santiago the Argentinean who are planning to produce a play with songs.
Discovering Christian’s songwriting talent, they take him to the Parisian cabaret club the Moulin Rouge, run by the larger-than-life Harold Zidler to attempt to get the work performed on its stage. While there, Christian falls in love with the club’s star actress and Courtesan, Satine.
If that sounds familiar, then you may have seen the 2021 film of the same name that the show is based on, starring Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman with Jim Broadbent, John Leguizamo and Richard Roxburgh.

The show officially opened in the West End on 20 January 2022 following previews from 13 November 2021. It had been due to open in March 2021 but had to be delayed due to Covid lockdowns. Prior to the West End opening it had opened on Braodway in November 2018, following a preview period in Boston, and in Baz Luhrmann’s native Australia in November 2021.
