Review: New York Brass Band, The Gateway, Glastonbury Festival 2023

We’re not sure anyone brought a better atmosphere to the festival than the wonderful New York Brass Band who brought the party vibe to The Gateway stage – one of a whopping eleven performances by the band across the weekend.

The band is a powerful team of some of Yorkshire’s finest musicians packing an arsenal of percussion, sax, trumpets, trombones and sousaphone

While Rick Astley belted out Never Gonna Give You Up on the Pyramid Stage, New York Brass Band had their own dance crew bouncing to their Brass version of the hit. And every track was a palpable hit with their audience growing as the set progressed.

It says something about the magnetism of the band which seemed to feed off the audience’s energy. Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance With Somebody was met with cheers from the audience as the band struck up the opening notes.

For many, New York Brass Band will have provided a fabled ‘Glastonbury moment’ when they brought new life to an old hit by someone’s favourite popstar and they danced among the fields of Glastonbury.
